About Crab Island

Destin's #1 attraction! A famous sandbar in Choctawhatchee Bay with crystal-clear waist-deep water where hundreds of boats anchor for a day of wading, floating, and socializing.

Crab Island is Destin's most unique attraction and ranked #3 out of 14 things to do in Destin by U.S. News & World Report. It's not actually an island, but rather a massive underwater sandbar just north of the Destin Bridge where the water is only waist-deep, creating an incredible floating playground.

What to Expect: During peak season, hundreds of boats anchor in the crystal-clear emerald-tinted bay water while people cluster on inflatables, wade in the shallows, and spend the day socializing. The atmosphere ranges from family-friendly areas to livelier zones β€” there's room for everyone.

About the Vendors (Important): Starting around 2020, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Okaloosa County, and the National Park Service tightened rules on the sandbar. The big floating restaurants and the inflatable waterpark that used to be out there are gone, alcohol sales on the water are banned, and only a small number of permitted vendor boats are allowed. In 2026 you'll find a handful of vendors selling tacos, nachos, burgers, loaded fries, ice cream, lemonades, slushies, and bottled water β€” mainly Friday–Sunday from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Don't count on vendors on weekdays or in the shoulder season. The best plan is to pack a full cooler on your boat.

How to Get There: Crab Island is only accessible by boat β€” no cars. It's a 5–7 minute ride from Destin Harbor, 10–15 minutes from Okaloosa Island, or 20–30 minutes from Fort Walton Beach. Options include renting a pontoon boat, joining a shuttle/water-taxi cruise ($10–20/person), booking a private charter, or riding jet skis or paddleboards.

Pro Tips:

  • Water depth varies from about 1 foot at low tide to 3–4 feet at high tide
  • No alcohol can be sold on the water β€” bring your own in your boat's cooler
  • Most remaining vendors accept cards, but bring a little cash too
  • Pack sunscreen, snacks, and a full cooler with water, sodas, and drinks
  • Water shoes or sandals recommended for walking on the sandbar
  • Visit at high tide for the best swimming experience
  • Early morning or weekdays are dramatically less crowded
